That one sentence saves you a lot of confusion. Search GitHub for "DeepSeek Harness desktop" and you get a pile of repos with near-identical names. Some are polished. Some are weekend projects. Only one is DeepSeek's.

I tested the official desktop app on camera in my video "FREE DeepSeek Harness App is INSANE!" (5 October 2026). This page is the map of the GitHub side: what the official repo holds, where the installers actually come from, and which community clients are worth a look.

DeepSeek Harness Desktop GitHub: The Official Repo

The official repo is deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness. It's DeepSeek's open-source agent harness, released under the MIT licence, with roughly 243,000 stars at the time of writing. The tagline is "Everything is a Plugin", and that's the whole design idea. Agent teams, scheduled tasks, voice input, review, web search, sub-agents, agent loops and shell access all ship as plugins.

Two things in the README matter before you touch anything. First, it warns there will be compatibility-breaking changes. This is a preview, and it moves fast. Second, it asks you to read its safety notice first. Do that. An agent with shell access can change files on your machine.

There are two ways to run DeepSeek Harness straight from the code side:

If you just want to start, the npm route is faster. If you want to contribute or audit, go from source.

Where the official desktop installers come from

Here's the bit people get wrong. The official desktop apps don't come from a GitHub release asset. They come from the official Harness page at deepseek.com/en/harness.

The v0.2 preview, announced 2 October 2026, added official desktop apps for macOS on Apple silicon and 64-bit Windows. The announcement lists Apple silicon; check the download page for Intel builds. The v0.2.0-rc.2 release notes mention a fix for an Intel Mac desktop build and for launching on Linux from a graphical entry, so that picture is still moving.

The releases on the repo list version notes: what changed, what got fixed, what's experimental. Read them for the changelog. Download the app from the Harness page. Full step-by-step is in my DeepSeek Harness desktop download guide.

Per the release notes, rc.2 (29 September 2026) lets the desktop app install and manage the dsh command from the menu bar, with no separate Node or pnpm install. Then v0.2.1-alpha.1 (3 October 2026) added an experimental Claude Code Mods compatibility layer and a "let the agent create a plugin" button in the plugin manager.

If you want a guided walkthrough, the AI Profit Boardroom has a full one-hour DeepSeek Harness course. You install it, connect a free model and build your first automation step by step.

DeepSeek Harness Desktop Anywhere Labs: What DSH Desktop Is

The Anywhere Labs repo, anywhere-labs/deepseek-harness-desktop, calls itself "DSH Desktop". Per the repo, it's an open-source desktop client for Windows x64 and macOS Universal.

What it does: it wraps the upstream web UI, host service and plugin system in a native app. You get a proper window, a tray icon, a built-in terminal, updates and work profiles. It runs a pinned upstream version of DeepSeek Harness unchanged, so the agent itself isn't modified. The README describes it this way: "the desktop itself is a plugin". That fits the whole Everything is a Plugin idea neatly.

It's MIT licensed. And it says plainly, in its own README, that it's an independent community project, not affiliated with or endorsed by DeepSeek.

The LAN warning. Per its README, if you expose DSH Desktop on your local network, anyone on that network can operate your computer. Only do that on a fully trusted network. Not a café. Not a shared office. Not a hotel.

Why would you pick it over the official app? Work profiles and the tray are the main draws. Plus a macOS Universal build, if you're on an older Intel Mac and want a native app today. If you don't need those, the official app does the job.

DeepSeek Harness Desktop Tauri Builds

Tauri is a Rust framework for wrapping a web UI as a lightweight desktop app. Several community clients use it because the installers come out small and the apps use less memory than heavier wrappers. DeepSeek Harness already has a web UI, so wrapping it is a natural fit.

Three Tauri-style or native community builds show up most:

None of these are official. They're handy, and the MIT licence means you can read every line. But a desktop wrapper around an agent with shell access is a lot of trust to hand a stranger.

Finding Plugins on GitHub: awesome-dsh-plugin

For plugins, the GitHub list to know is awesome-dsh-plugin, with about 17,800 stars. In my video I showed how it sorts plugins by category: memory, UI, models and providers, themes and more.

Inside the app, I saw that about 60% of DeepSeek Harness users run third-party plugins. That's why the plugin manager is the headline feature in v0.2. Per DeepSeek's announcement, you install a plugin by typing its npm package name. You can also use Creator mode to describe a plugin in chat and have Harness write it for you.

The same rule applies to plugins as to desktop clients: a plugin runs inside your agent, so check who wrote it. My DeepSeek Harness plugins guide covers the ones worth installing.

How to Choose a DeepSeek Harness Desktop Build Safely

Here's the order I'd follow:

  1. Official first. Get the app from deepseek.com/en/harness, or run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web. Only look at community builds if you need something the official app lacks.
  2. Check the maintainer. Who runs the repo? Do they have other real projects? Is there a named person or company behind it?
  3. Check the licence. Everything in the table above is MIT. If a repo has no licence, walk away.
  4. Check recent commits. DeepSeek Harness ships breaking changes. A wrapper that hasn't been updated in weeks may be pinned to an old version.
  5. Check the star count. Stars aren't proof of safety. But a repo with three stars and a polished installer deserves extra suspicion.
  6. Read the safety notice. The official README asks you to. The Anywhere Labs README has its own LAN warning. Read both.

One more practical point. DeepSeek Harness comes from a Chinese company. Don't put private data through it that you aren't comfortable sharing. That goes for any AI tool, really. Just be deliberate about what you connect.

If you want the bigger picture on the app itself, start with my DeepSeek Harness desktop overview. If you're weighing it against Anthropic's agent, see DeepSeek Harness vs Claude Code. I also run DeepSeek Harness inside my own setup, which you can see in the Agent OS guide, and I compare models and agents on Goldie Bench.

FAQ

Is DeepSeek Harness on GitHub?

Yes. The official repo is deepseek-ai/deepseek-harness, MIT licensed, with roughly 243,000 stars. You can run it from npm or build it from source. The official desktop installers come from deepseek.com/en/harness, not from a GitHub release asset.

Is Anywhere Labs DSH Desktop official?

No. Per its own README, DSH Desktop is an independent community project, not affiliated with or endorsed by DeepSeek. It runs a pinned, unchanged upstream version of DeepSeek Harness inside a native app. If you use it, heed its warning: don't expose it on a network you don't fully trust.

What is the DeepSeek Harness Tauri app?

It's a community desktop build that uses Tauri, a Rust framework, to wrap the DeepSeek Harness web UI as a lightweight app. The best known is dsh-tauri/deepseek-harness-desktop, with about 3,000 stars and Windows, macOS and Linux builds. AleCyriaco/deepseek-harness-desktop is another, built on Tauri v2. Neither is official.
