Is there a Grok Bot free trial right now?
Not as a standard offer on the access screen. The Grok Bot changelog at x.ai/changelog/bot, version v0.78.1 dated 27 Oct 2026, reads: "Where Grok Bot offered a free trial, it now offers Get Grok Bot with a unified plan and See Unified Plans."
Trials still exist in narrower routes:
- The referral program gives invited friends a 2-week free trial of Premium.
- The iPhone App Store can run store free trials, which the docs call intro offers.
- Enterprise admins can start a Grok Bot trial for their team.
Android has no in-app trial, per xAI's mobile docs.

What the docs say vs the 27 Oct Grok Bot free trial change
The sources don't line up, so here is each one as written.
The Grok Bot FAQ (docs.x.ai/grok-bot/faq.md, read 3 Nov 2026) still has a section called "Is there a free trial?" It says some accounts can try Grok Bot before paying when the access screen offers Start Trial. Per that FAQ:
- The trial is a usage credit, and a 7-day window also applies.
- It never turns into a paid plan.
- The credit is drawn down by agent steps and tokens, not by the number of messages.
- One big task can use all of it, and used credit is not restored.
The changelog (v0.78.1, 27 Oct 2026) says the free trial offer was replaced by Get Grok Bot with a unified plan and See Unified Plans.
So the docs still describe a Start Trial button, while the newer changelog says that offer was swapped out. The changelog is the more recent of the two. If you see Start Trial on your access screen, the FAQ rules above apply. If you see Get Grok Bot and See Unified Plans, there is no general trial on offer for your account.

Grok Bot free trial through the referral program
xAI's referral docs (docs.x.ai/x-subscription/referral-program.md) are the clearest trial route right now. A paid subscriber shares a link, and the invited friend gets a 2-week free trial of Premium.
What the friend needs, per the docs:
- To be new to Grok.
- To be located in any country except China.
- An eligible email address.
- A credit card entered at checkout to start the trial.
The friend gets a reminder 7 days before their first charge. The referrer must be on a paid Premium, Super, or Ultra plan on The X Subscription, be based in the US, and be at least 7 days past checkout. Plus and Team plans can't refer right now, and the docs call Cursor and SuperGrok legacy plans that can't refer either.
In-app purchases through Apple or Google don't count. The friend has to start from the referral link. Referral links sit behind the gift icon in the Grok Bot app, or at grok.com/dashboard/referrals on the web.

Grok Bot free trial on iPhone vs Android
xAI's mobile docs (docs.x.ai/grok-bot/mobile.md) split the two platforms:
- iPhone: Apple handles in-app subscriptions, including store free trials. Cancel in Apple ID, then Subscriptions before the trial ends if you don't want it to convert to a paid subscription.
- Android: Google Play handles in-app subscriptions, and the docs say plainly that Android has no in-app trial.
The FAQ adds that an App Store free trial started in the iOS app is different from the usage-credit trial. Apple runs it, and it becomes a paid Apple subscription unless you cancel first. Enterprise Grok Bot free trial for teams
Two changelog lines cover team trials:
- v0.33.0 (1 Sep 2026): Enterprise admins can start a Grok Bot trial for their team from the dashboard, and Bot settings show when the trial ends.
- v0.37.0 (3 Sep 2026): Enterprise admins see how many days are left in their Grok Bot trial on the dashboard Overview.
The 27 Oct change doesn't mention Enterprise trials. The team setup is covered in Grok Bot teams.
How to cancel a Grok Bot free trial
The steps depend on how the trial started.
- Usage-credit trial (Start Trial): the FAQ says Cancel Trial appears on free-plan accounts, and there is no charge to cancel. Use Cancel Trial in Settings, Usage & Billing on desktop, or Settings, Usage on iPhone and Android. This removes any remaining trial credit, and you can't start the trial again. The changelog first listed Cancel Trial in v0.18.0 (12 Aug 2026).
- iPhone App Store trial: cancel in Apple ID, then Subscriptions before it ends. xAI can't cancel or refund an Apple subscription for you.
- Referral Premium trial: cancel before the first charge. The 7-day reminder is there for that. xAI's cancel docs say web-billed plans are cancelled from your current plan's options, and you can cancel at any time.
What happens after a Grok Bot free trial ends
- Usage-credit trial: it never turns into a paid plan, per the FAQ. On a paid plan or Teams seat, the trial ends on its own.
- App Store trial: it becomes a paid Apple subscription unless you cancel first.
- Referral trial: the friend becomes a paid subscriber unless they cancel. If they cancel during the trial, the referrer gets no reward.
A side note on the same 27 Oct release: it added a template called "Try it, don't pay for it." That template is for trials of other services you sign up for. It starts the trial for you and cancels it, or reminds you, before it bills. It is not a Grok Bot trial. Templates are covered in Grok Bot templates.

Does the Grok Bot free trial need a credit card?
The referral trial does: the docs say a credit card is required to start it. The FAQ doesn't list a card for the usage-credit trial. App Store trials bill through your Apple ID.
Can I restart a Grok Bot free trial after cancelling?
No. The FAQ says Cancel Trial removes remaining trial credit and you can't start the trial again.
