Grok Bot memory is how each Bot from xAI keeps your preferences, rules, facts about you and a dated log of its work, so it remembers them in every chat you have with it. Each Bot has its own memory. Only you can change a personal Bot's memory, and you manage it by asking in chat.

How Grok Bot memory works
xAI's docs say a Bot retains stable preferences, important facts and summaries from its work. That lets it keep a role over time without replaying every message. It saves lasting things such as:
- How you like to work, and your preferences
- Rules you ask it to keep, like "Always ask before you send an email"
- Facts about you, like your name and time zone
- A dated log of what it has worked on with you
The Bot decides on its own when something is worth keeping. It does not ask first. It often mentions a save in its reply, but not every save shows up in the chat. To make sure it keeps something, tell it: "Remember that I'm out every Friday."
This is also how you set up a Bot. xAI's Get Started guide says to give each Bot one primary job in its first message and ask it to remember how it should work. Personal Bots no longer have a settings page for this. To change what a Bot does, tell it in chat, and it keeps lasting rules in memory.

Grok Bot memory across chats and Bots
The v0.75.2 changelog (22 Oct 2026) put it plainly: what a personal Bot saves to memory in one chat is remembered in all your chats with it, and only you can change it.
xAI's docs add three details:
- Each Bot has its own memory. Your research Bot and your inbox Bot keep separate memories.
- A few facts are shared. Things like your name and time zone are shared by all your Bots. When one Bot learns one, the others know it too.
- Calls and group chats. In a voice chat, a Bot can draw on your earlier calls and your recent chat. In a group chat, your Bot can use what you told it privately, but its memory is not shared with the other Bots there.
Two recent fixes matter here. v0.59.0 says Bots with a lot of saved memory or skills reply without a several-second pause, and save and forget memories reliably. v0.78.1 (27 Oct 2026) says two saves to the same memory at once no longer overwrite each other.

See, correct or delete Grok Bot memory
There is no memory screen for a personal Bot. xAI's docs say to ask in chat:
- To see it: "What do you remember about me?"
- To correct it: "That's out of date. I moved to Denver."
- To remove it: "Forget that I'm on the launch team."
If a fact that all your Bots share is wrong, tell any Bot the right version. To remove a shared fact completely, ask the Bot that saved it.
Here is what resets or deletes memory, per xAI's docs and changelog:
| What you do | What happens to Grok Bot memory |
|---|---|
| Reset a conversation | Memory is kept, along with files, routines and settings |
| Hide a Bot from the sidebar | Memory is kept and routines keep running |
| Duplicate a Bot on iPhone | The copy gets settings, skills and routines, but not learned memory |
| Delete a Bot | That Bot's memory is erased, with its conversations, routines and attachments |
| Delete your account | All your Bots' memory is deleted |
Deleting a Bot cannot be undone, and xAI says it also removes the shared facts that Bot saved for your other Bots. If you might need the memory later, choose Hide from sidebar instead.

Import Grok Bot memory from another assistant
Version 0.77.0 (26 Oct 2026) added Import Memory. You can bring your preferences and context from another AI assistant into your primary Bot.
- Open Settings, then General, and choose Start Import under Import.
- Copy the prompt into a chat with your other assistant.
- Paste its answer into the second box.
- Choose Add to Memory.
Grok Bot sends the import to your primary Bot and opens that chat. xAI's mobile docs list Import Memory on the phone too.
Grok Bot memory on Team Bots and shared Bots
Memory works differently once a team is involved. From xAI's shared Bots docs:
- A shared Bot can save team learnings. It tells you when it does.
- It does not save personal things about you for the team. What it remembers about working with you stays between you and the Bot.
- Chats stay private. The owner and Managers cannot read your chats with a shared Bot.
- Managers can change memory. A Manager can change a shared Bot's instructions, skills, memory and apps. A Collaborator can only chat.
- Your personal facts stay out. A teammate's shared Bot does not get the facts your own Bots share about you.
The changelog adds two Team lines. v0.61.0 (26 Sep 2026): Publish to Team in a Bot's Share menu makes a team copy with its chat and memories, or you can Start fresh, and your original Bot stays private. v0.77.0: linked teammates on a Team Bot use their own connectors and memory.

What not to put in Grok Bot memory
xAI's docs say logins, cards and contact info like addresses and phone numbers belong in Vault, not memory. Vault fills them into pages without the Bot seeing the secret values.
The docs also say memory is not a source of truth:
- Keep changing facts in the source system.
- Ask the Bot to cite or reopen current data for big decisions.
- Correct stale assumptions directly.
- Back safety rules with approvals and Auto-review rules, not memory alone.
That last point matters. xAI's security docs say Auto Review does not review every side effect, and memory writes are one example. So a rule like "never send email without asking" should live in an Ask first rule as well as in memory.
Grok Bot memory vs Hermes memory
Grok Bot memory is managed for you and edited through chat. Open-source agents like Hermes let you pick and tune the memory system yourself. Compare them in the Hermes memory system, best Hermes Agent memory and Grok Bot vs Hermes. For how Bots use the browser on their computer, see Grok Bot browser. For how we test models, see Goldie Bench. For the full system we run, read the Agent OS guide.

Grok Bot memory FAQ
Does Grok Bot remember past conversations?
Yes. What a Bot saves in one chat, it remembers in all your chats with it. It saves preferences, rules, facts and a dated work log, not a full replay of every message.
How do I clear Grok Bot memory?
Ask the Bot, for example "Forget that I'm on the launch team." Resetting a conversation keeps memory. Deleting the Bot erases its memory for good.
Can my team see my Grok Bot memory?
No. A personal Bot's memory is yours and only you can change it. A shared Bot can save team learnings, but it keeps what it knows about you between you and the Bot.
Can I move memory from another AI assistant into Grok Bot?
Yes, with Import Memory in Settings. You paste a prompt into your other assistant, paste its answer back, and choose Add to Memory.
