Grok bot for research means handing xAI's agent a question and getting back a source-linked report: it reads the web in its own browser, searches public X, analyses your files, and can run a weekly digest as a routine while your laptop is closed.

It's built for desk research, the kind a small business owner does between other jobs: checking competitors, watching a market, reading what people say on X, and turning it into something you can act on.
Every workflow below names a feature from xAI's Grok Bot docs or the changelog (latest v0.78.1, 27 October 2026), written as a prompt you can copy.

What Grok Bot for research actually does
Grok Bot runs on a cloud computer with a browser, a command line and a filesystem. All of your Bots share that one computer, and each Bot gets its own screen on it. A shared folder at /workspace holds project files.
The research building blocks in the docs:
- Browser. The Bot opens and reads web pages, takes full-size screenshots, and (per v0.70.2) can save a web page as a PDF.
- Search and read X. Without connecting an account, a Bot can search posts, open a post from its link, read an account's posts and mentions, see who quoted or reposted a post, count recent posts on a topic, and check trends and news. It's read-only.
- Files. It reads PDF, CSV, JSON, spreadsheets and images.
- Reviewable results. A document with source links, a spreadsheet with columns and formulas, a slide deck with speaker notes, or a folder of screenshots.
- Projects. The v0.57.0 notes say "A Bot can start a Project when you ask for one: a Cloud Agent that plans the work and runs its own agents."
The v0.75.2 notes add two research touches: in Slack, asking the Bot to "investigate, research, or check" something gets a researched answer, and source links show as citation chips. See Grok Bot browser for how the browser side works.

Grok Bot for research: six copyable workflows
These are illustrations. Swap in your own market and sources.
1. Competitor snapshot
A small bookkeeping firm could send:
"Visit the websites of these four competitors. For each, record their services, who they say they serve, any published pricing page link, and their latest blog post date. Put it in a Google Doc with a source link after every fact. List anything you couldn't find under 'Not verified'."
xAI's files guide suggests asking for exactly this: direct source links, timestamps and "an explicit list of anything the Bot could not verify."
2. Scan what people say on X
"Search public X posts from the last two weeks about [topic]. Count how many posts mention it, pull the five most-quoted posts with links, and group the complaints and requests you see. Separate what posters said from your own read of it."
If you see a thread worth digging into while scrolling, reply with "@bot summarize this thread and send the key points to my Slack". That's the docs' own example. @bot posts only a confirmation on X, and the work stays in your Bot's chat. xAI's docs say tagging isn't available for accounts based in Australia, the UK, the EU, Iceland, Liechtenstein or Norway.
3. Weekly research digest as a routine
"Every Monday at 8am, check these six industry news sites and search X for [keyword]. Write a one-page digest: what changed, why it matters to a small agency, and source links. Draft it as an email to me. Don't send it. If a source has nothing new, say so instead of padding."
That last line follows the docs' advice to give every routine a no-data and stale-data policy. Use the Test button before you switch it on. More in Grok Bot routines.
4. Analyse your own files
"Here are last quarter's survey results as a CSV and our two competitor brochures as PDFs. Find the top five customer requests, check which ones the competitors already cover, and return a spreadsheet with columns for request, count, competitor coverage and source file."
Save the format as a skill once it's right, so the next quarter's run matches.
5. A Project for a bigger study
"Start a Project: research the five main AI scheduling tools for clinics. Plan the work, split it across agents, and return one report with a comparison table, source links and open questions."
A Project is a Cloud Agent that plans the work and runs its own agents. When a Cloud Agent finishes, xAI's docs say the Bot copies files cited in its final report to its computer and attaches them to its reply.
6. Turn findings into a deck
"Turn the competitor doc into an eight-slide Google Slides deck with speaker notes. One slide per competitor, one summary, one slide of open questions."
The v0.75.2 notes say large Google Slides edits update the live deck. Want help picking which of these to run first? Book a free AI strategy session.
Grok Bot for research limits to plan around
- It isn't a database. It reads what's on the pages and posts it can reach. Paywalled sources, private data and sites without access stay out unless you connect or sign in.
- Verify the sources. Ask for a link behind every claim and open the important ones yourself. xAI's docs warn not to rely on a screenshot alone for fast-changing data.
- Web pages can try to steer it. xAI's security docs say outside content is marked as untrusted and that the controls "reduce, but do not eliminate, risk." Keep research Bots on read-and-report work.
- Separate fact from inference. The docs suggest asking for facts, assumptions, completed actions, pending actions and open questions as separate lists.
- Routines spend usage. Each run counts, so schedule digests, not every-new-message listeners.
Who Grok Bot for research fits, and who it doesn't
It fits:
- Owners and small teams who need competitor and market checks done weekly without doing them by hand.
- Anyone who tracks conversations on X, since reading public X needs no account connection.
- People who want the output as a doc, sheet or deck they can share, not a chat reply.
It doesn't fit:
- Academic work that needs licensed journal databases the Bot can't sign in to.
- Regulated research where every source must come from an approved system.
- Anyone wanting answers without checking sources.

Grok Bot for research FAQ
Can Grok Bot read X without my account?
Yes. xAI's docs say Bots can search and read public X without connecting an account. For your DMs, bookmarks or home timeline, add the X plugin, which needs X API credits on your X developer account.
Does Grok Bot cite its sources?
Ask for a document with source links and it returns one. The v0.75.2 changelog says source links in replies show as citation chips. Open the key links yourself before you rely on them.
What is a Grok Bot Project?
Per the v0.57.0 changelog, a Project is a Cloud Agent that plans the work and runs its own agents. Use it for research too big for one chat.
How do I start with Grok Bot for research?
Run the competitor snapshot once, fix the format, save it as a skill, then turn it into a weekly routine. For templates and coaching on AI agents, join the AI Profit Boardroom, or book a free AI strategy session to plan your Grok Bot for research setup.
