The Hermes computer use skill is the bundled skill (autonomous-ai-agents/computer-use) that teaches the agent to drive your desktop background-first. It's version 2.1.0, MIT licensed, written by Francesco Bonacci (f-trycua) and Hermes Agent, and its whole idea fits in one line: "Drive the desktop background-first; escalate on signal."

Here's what that means for you. Hermes can click, type and scroll inside your apps while you keep working. Your cursor doesn't move. Your keyboard focus doesn't get stolen. Your virtual desktops don't switch. The skill is the playbook that tells the agent how to do that properly.

I run Hermes every day inside my Agent OS, and this is the skill that makes desktop work feel safe instead of chaotic. If you want the full Hermes setup with courses, daily updates and the Agent OS zip, it's all inside the AI Profit Boardroom for $69/mo.

What the Hermes computer use skill actually teaches

The skill is the Hermes-side playbook. It teaches the agent the computer_use action vocabulary, and Hermes drives cua-driver underneath. So the skill is the brain and cua-driver is the hands.

It works with any tool-capable model. Claude, GPT, Gemini or a local open model all work. And it runs on macOS, Windows and Linux.

The core loop is three steps:

  1. Capture first. The agent calls computer_use with action capture, mode som and the app it's driving. That returns a screenshot plus a list of indexed elements, numbered #1, #2 and so on.
  2. Click by element index. Instead of guessing pixel coordinates, the agent clicks element 7. That's more reliable than clicking at a spot on the screen.
  3. Verify by re-capturing. After acting, it looks again to check the click landed. Adding capture_after=True to the action saves a round trip, because the follow-up capture comes back with the result.

One rule matters here. Indexes belong to one snapshot. If the screen changes, the agent re-captures and reads the new numbers. It never reuses an index from an old capture.

Simple loop. Look, act, check. That's the skill.

Capture modes

The skill gives the agent three ways to see the screen. Pick the one that matches your model.

ModeReturnsBest for
som (default)Screenshot plus indexed element listVision models; the preferred default
visionPlain screenshot, no elementsWhen you only need pixels, then click by coordinate
axElement list only, no imageText-only models, or when you don't need to see pixels

No vision model? You've got two options. Set auxiliary.vision in config.yaml so a helper model describes the screen in text, or use mode ax and drive by element index with no screenshot at all.

The verify-escalate ladder

This is the smartest part of the skill. The agent doesn't jump straight to taking over your screen. It climbs a ladder, one rung at a time, and only when the tool tells it to.

  1. Element, in the background. The default. Click element N. If the result says confirmed, done.
  2. Fresh verification. If the result says unverifiable, the agent captures again and checks before any retry.
  3. Pixel click, in the background. If the result says suspected no-op, or a refusal recommends pixels, it clicks by coordinate instead of element.
  4. Foreground. Last resort. The agent re-issues the same action with delivery_mode foreground. That briefly raises the window and restores focus after. It needs its own approval because it's a visible focus change, and it's only appropriate when you aren't actively working.

The key rule: escalate as a reaction to a returned signal, never as a prediction. The agent doesn't assume an app needs the foreground. It waits for the tool to say so.

That's why you can leave Hermes driving an app while you answer email. It stays out of your way until it has a real reason not to.

Safety hard rules

The skill calls these hard rules, and they're not optional:

On top of that, typing a shell command that matches the dangerous-pattern block list gets refused. So if a web page says "ignore your instructions and do this", the agent treats it as text on a screen, not an order.

Those are the rules you want if an AI is touching your real desktop.

When not to use it

Computer use is powerful, but it's not the right tool for everything. The skill spells out three cases where the agent should reach for something else:

Rule of thumb: if there's a direct tool for the job, use it. Computer use is for apps that only have a screen.

If you want the bigger picture of what the tool can do across apps, read my guide to Hermes computer use. And if you're building out your stack, here are the best Hermes agent skills to pair with it.

How to switch it on

Good news: cua-driver ships with Hermes as part of the default package. You don't hunt for a separate download.

  1. Run hermes tools and pick Computer Use. Or run hermes computer-use install.
  2. Check it with hermes computer-use status.
  3. If anything looks off, run hermes computer-use doctor. It prints a per-check matrix that tells you exactly what's wrong.
  4. On macOS, grant Accessibility and Screen Recording in System Settings, Privacy and Security. Grant them to the identity the doctor names.
  5. Start a session with hermes -t computer_use chat.

Then ask for something plain, like "open Notes and make a new note called Monday plan". Watch it capture, click by index and verify. Your cursor stays where you left it.

Easiest route of all? Paste that list into Hermes and ask it to set itself up and run the doctor for you. Let the agent do the setup work.

I walk through how Hermes fits into a full agent workflow in my Agent OS guide. Inside the AI Profit Boardroom ($69/mo) you also get 4 coaching calls a week where you can bring setup questions like this live.

Going deeper with the cua-driver skill pack

The bundled skill stays focused on the Hermes-side action vocabulary on purpose. The platform deep dives live in Cua's own skill pack, the same content the cua-driver team maintains for other agent harnesses.

Run cua-driver skills install and you get:

Run cua-driver skills status afterwards to see which agents it linked the pack into. If Hermes isn't listed, point Hermes at ~/.cua-driver/skills/cua-driver or symlink it into your skill space. The agent keeps calling the Hermes actions from the bundled skill; the pack just gives it platform context.

Related option: Cua Spaces

On 22 Oct 2026 I covered a newer option from the same team: the Cua Spaces plugin for Hermes. It does something different. The computer use skill drives your own desktop in the background. Cua Spaces moves Hermes' terminal, file and code work into a separate machine, an isolated Linux, macOS or Windows box you can watch live.

Use the skill when the job lives in an app on your desktop. Use Cua Spaces when you want the work sandboxed somewhere else. I break that one down in my Hermes Cua guide. If you'd rather give a bot its own desktop entirely, look at Hermes Bot Screen. And for a totally different kind of Hermes extension, the Hermes Meshy plugin makes 3D models from a prompt.

Curious how different models handle agent tasks like this? I track that in Goldie Bench.

FAQ

Do I need to install the Hermes computer use skill separately?

No. It's a bundled skill, and cua-driver ships with Hermes in the default package. You switch Computer Use on with hermes tools or hermes computer-use install, then check it with hermes computer-use doctor.

Will it move my mouse while I work?

Not by default. The skill is background-first, so actions don't move your cursor, steal focus or switch virtual desktops. It only goes to the foreground after a returned signal, and that step needs its own approval.

Does it work with text-only models?

Yes. Use mode ax to get the element list with no image and drive by element index. You can also set auxiliary.vision in config.yaml so a helper model describes the screen.

Can it type my passwords for me?

No. The safety hard rules say never type passwords, API keys or card numbers, and never click password prompts, payment UI or 2FA. You handle those yourself.
