Model support releases rarely make flashy demos, but they decide what your agent can actually think with. The release notes do not spell out a capability ordering for the tiers, so I will not invent one here; what matters operationally is that you can now match the tier to the job inside OpenClaw rather than being locked to whatever single GPT-5.6 endpoint a wrapper chose for you. Reasoning-heavy planning work and cheap high-volume drafting can run on different tiers of the same family, under one agent.
Second, the support spans the Codex runtime as well as OpenClaw proper. - High-volume production runs on the cheapest tier that passes your quality bar. Drafting, summarising, extraction, first-pass research — volume work is where tier flexibility turns directly into margin.
- Coding goes through the Codex runtime on the same family. Keeping planner and coder in one model family reduces the translation losses you get when two different vendors' models hand work to each other mid-task.
A worked example makes the stakes concrete. Picture a lead-generation agent that plans an outreach campaign, researches two hundred prospects, drafts personalised first lines and writes the follow-up code for your CRM. That is four different jobs with four different quality bars. Put the planning step on a reasoning-heavy tier and a bad plan never reaches execution; put the two hundred research-and-draft passes on the economical tier and your cost per lead drops by an order of magnitude; hand the CRM code to the Codex runtime on the same family and the handoff loses nothing in translation.
