The v0.20.6 notes then added TTL result caching for web_search and web_extract. Time-to-live caching means that when your agent asks the same question twice inside the cache window, the second answer comes from the cache instead of a new outbound request. For agent workloads this matters more than it sounds, because agents are repetitive by nature — a research loop will happily re-search the same phrase five times while it reasons, and caching turns four of those five into free instant hits.

Getting value out of the free tier is less about setup — there is none — and more about pointing it at work that compounds. Here is how I run it, best use first.
- SEO research loops. My content agents live on web search: pulling live phrasings, checking what ranks, verifying claims before they go in a draft. The Hermes SEO skills I use daily all lean on web_search under the bonnet, and every one of them now runs on a fresh install with no keys.
- Fact-checking before publishing. I make agents verify anything that smells like a claim against a live source before it ships. Free search means that verification pass costs nothing, so there is no excuse to skip it.

Where the free tier fits among your other tools
Web search is the read-the-world tool. Honest Limits of the Keyless Tier
I would not be much use to you if I only cheered. Three things to keep in mind, based on what the release notes do and do not say.
- No published quotas. The notes describe a free rotation across five vendors, but do not publish per-user limits. Sensible reading: it is sized for normal agent use, not for hammering. If you are running heavy scheduled research fleets, keep a dedicated key as an option.
- You do not choose the vendor. A rotation means results can come from different backends run to run. For most research tasks that is invisible; if a workflow depends on one specific search provider's behaviour, configure that provider explicitly as before.
- Fresh-install framing. The notes specifically call out fresh installs with zero keys. If you have an existing configured setup, your configured providers keep doing their job — the free tier is the floor under everything, not a forced replacement.
