Hermes Desktop App setup is genuinely 5 minutes if you do the steps in the right order.

Most setup tutorials skip the painful parts.

This one walks every step and every gotcha.

By the end you'll have the Hermes Desktop App running, connected to your Hermes agent, with at least one custom profile configured.

Prerequisites

Before you start:

Hermes already installed. If not, my hermes ai course post covers the base install.
At least one model API key. Anthropic, OpenRouter, or local Ollama.
5-10 minutes of focus.

That's it.

Step 1 — Get The Install Command (30 seconds)

Open your existing Hermes terminal session.

Type:

"Install the Hermes Desktop App for me. I'm on Mac."

Hermes will run a series of commands and tell you when to act.

The clever bit: Hermes installs Hermes Desktop for you.

You don't need to track down the GitHub repo, copy commands, debug install errors. Hermes handles it.

If anything errors, paste the error back into Hermes terminal and say "fix this."

Step 2 — Run The Platform Install (2 minutes)

Hermes will give you a one-line bash command for your platform.

Run it.

For Mac:

brew install --cask hermes-desktop

(Exact command may differ — Hermes provides the current one.)

Wait 60-120 seconds.

The app appears in /Applications.

Step 3 — First Launch (30 seconds)

Open Hermes Desktop.

You'll see the welcome flow:

Default profile imported from your terminal config
Existing skills, memory, sessions visible
Model providers ready to configure

If your terminal Hermes was already configured, the desktop app inherits everything.

Step 4 — Configure A Model Provider (1 minute)

Click Models in the sidebar.

Three options:

A. Anthropic (Claude) — paste your API key, done. Most reliable.

B. OpenRouter — paste your OpenRouter API key. Now you have access to dozens of models.

C. Ollama — point at localhost:11434 if you've got Ollama running locally. Free.

Pick one to start. You can add more later.

Step 5 — First Chat Test (30 seconds)

Click Chat tab.

Pick a model from the dropdown.

Type:

"Are you working? What model are you running?"

Hermes responds with the model name and confirms it's online.

Setup is verified.

Step 6 — Configure Multiple Profiles (Optional, 2 minutes)

Click Agents.

Click "+ New Profile".

Give it a name, persona, skill list.

Now you can switch between profiles like switching tabs.

I recommend at least three:

Default — general assistant
Sales — formal, customer-facing
Research — deep dive, long context

Each profile keeps its own session history.

Step 7 — Connect Gateways (Optional, 5 minutes)

Click Gateway in settings.

Toggle on Telegram (or Discord, Email).

Paste your bot token.

Save.

Now you can message your Hermes from Telegram and replies appear in both desktop AND Telegram.

Common Setup Issues

App won't launch. Quit and restart. If still broken, check Console.app for crash logs.

Can't connect to Hermes terminal. Make sure terminal Hermes is on v0.11+. Earlier versions don't expose the desktop API.

Models tab empty. Add at least one provider — desktop app doesn't ship with default keys.

Sessions not syncing. Click refresh in sessions tab. Initial sync takes 10-20 seconds.

Migrate from OpenClaw fails. Sometimes path issues — copy your OpenClaw config folder to ~/.hermes/migrate/ and try again.

Maintenance

Update weekly. Hermes Desktop is active development. New features ship often.

Export config monthly. Settings > Export. Saves your profiles, skills, gateway configs to a single JSON file. Drop in private repo as backup.

Test models quarterly. New models drop. Add them to your profiles. Old ones may degrade.

For personal use, the install above is fine.

For team/agency use:

Run on a £5-10/month VPS for always-on access
Configure HTTPS via Cloudflare Tunnel
Set up team-shared profiles
Add SSO if your team needs it

No — Hermes Desktop is light. Any Mac with 8GB RAM is fine.

Can I run on Windows?

WSL2 is the supported path. Native Windows isn't supported yet.

Can I run multiple Hermes Desktop instances?

Yes — different profiles, different ports.

Is the free tier enough?

For personal daily use, yes. For agency volume, you'll want OpenRouter or Anthropic API top-ups.
