Hermes desktop Mac is the fastest way I've found to run a serious AI agent without ever touching the terminal.

In this post I'm going to walk you through the exact setup I used on my own Mac.

You'll have it installed, a model plugged in, memory switched on, and your first agent chat running in under ten minutes.

No code, no commands, no jargon.

Let's get your Hermes desktop Mac install done properly.

This is a do-it-with-me guide, not a theory lecture.

Follow each step in order and you'll be chatting with your own Mac agent before your coffee goes cold.

Step 1: Download Hermes Desktop On Your Mac

Head to the Hermes website and click download.

The page auto-detects your machine, so on a Mac it recommends the Mac OS build straight away.

Click that build, let it download, and open the installer.

It installs fast, and for me the whole download-to-open part took a couple of minutes.

Once it's open, you'll see your conversations panel on one side and a chat window in the middle.

That's the home base for everything you'll do on Hermes desktop Mac.

Step 2: Pick Your Model

This is the step most people overlook, and it's the one that decides how smart your agent feels.

Open the settings panel.

Find the model picker and choose which LLM powers your agent.

I plugged in MiniMax M2 for mine, which is fast and capable.

You can also set different models for different jobs, like one for session searches and one for MCP tools.

If you want to run it completely free and local, plug in a model through Ollama.

I show that exact free route in my Ollama Hermes setup.

Here's a quick model cheat sheet for your Mac.

Use case Model choice Why
Best all-round MiniMax M2 Fast, capable, cheap
Free and local Ollama model No API cost, runs offline
Heavy reasoning A larger hosted model Better for complex tasks
Tight budget Smaller local model Lower the context window to match

Step 3: Turn On Persistent Memory

Go into the workspace options and set up your user profile.

This is what gives your Mac agent persistent memory across sessions.

Turn on the context engine so it automatically compresses old conversations.

That stops you running out of context window, especially on a smaller model.

Set the compression threshold so it kicks in before things get tight.

If you're on a model with a 256k context window, lean towards more aggressive compression.

This one setting is the difference between an agent that remembers you and one that forgets everything every time.

For the full memory build that makes this genuinely powerful, see my Hermes second brain guide.

Step 4: Set Up Voice (Optional)

If you want to talk to your agent, head to the voice settings.

Pick your voice and choose a provider like ElevenLabs, OpenAI or XAI.

You can switch off speech-to-text if you'd rather just type.

The fun trick is plugging in your own ElevenLabs voice clone so your agent replies in your voice.

Heads up though.

When I tested the live voice agent on Mac, it asked for permissions but didn't give me a clear way to grant them.

So voice was hit and miss for me.

If voice is a must-have today, run it through a full agent OS instead, which I cover in my Hermes voice agent guide.

Step 5: Manage Your APIs And Gateways

Back in settings, you'll find the gateways and APIs section.

Here you select your APIs, switch between them, and change the models behind each one.

It's not just for the Hermes models either.

You can manage the APIs for the tools as well, all from one panel.

This is the part the terminal made painful, and the Mac app makes it a few clicks.

Step 6: Run Your First Agent Chat

Now start a new session and type your first task.

Keep it simple for the test, like asking it to draft a list or summarise something.

For me it replied in about five seconds, which is solid.

You can attach files and folders, pin important sessions, and switch between your messaging apps.

You can also manage skills and tools, toggling them on and off as needed.

There's even a smart home skill that controls the lights in your rooms, which links your agent to the real world.

That's your Hermes desktop Mac setup done.

What To Do After Setup

Don't just let it sit there looking pretty.

Pick one task you hate doing.

Give your agent the context, describe the task clearly, and let it run.

Then save that as a skill and put it on a schedule so it runs without you.

That's how you turn a fresh install into a real productivity machine.

If you want to go further and run multiple agents together, I'd build a full command centre, which I break down in my Agent OS Hermes guide.

FAQ: Hermes Desktop Mac Setup

How long does Hermes desktop Mac take to set up?

Under ten minutes for most people, including download, model setup and your first chat.

The download itself is just a couple of minutes.

Do I need to code to set up Hermes desktop on Mac?

No, that's the whole point of the desktop app.

You manage models, APIs, memory and voice with clicks, not terminal commands.

What's the best model for Hermes desktop Mac?

MiniMax M2 is a great all-round pick, and Ollama models work well if you want it free and local.

You can set different models for different jobs.

Why isn't voice working on my Hermes desktop Mac?

The live voice agent had permission bugs when I tested it.

For reliable voice today, run it through a full agent OS setup instead.

Can I run Hermes desktop Mac for free?

Yes, the app is free, and if you run local models through Ollama you avoid API costs entirely.
